Most college graduates today find it difficult to sell themselves to potential employers. Many colleges focus on academic life rather than life after college and as a consequence graduates encounter problems during the job interview process. Students are not taught how to polish their cover letter and resume during college and most have to learn the hard way when trying to land the all important post college job. The first stop on the road to being hired for a post college job is crafting a great cover letter and resume.

The letter and resume go hand in hand, without a letter a resume is incomplete and vice versa. Typically student resumes are very different from professional level letters and resumes. Since most often recent graduates have little to no work experience, the letter and resume typically highlight their educational background and skills. However, since most degree programs require some sort of practicum or internship to fulfill graduation requirements students are encouraged to go into detail about any internships or job positions related to their field of expertise in the resume.


In general, jobseekers create their resume before writing their cover letter. This allows them to have one working resume and tailor their resume specifically for each job position. Hence, it is advisable to create a resume before making a cover letter so that you will have an idea of what to include based on the information in the resume.

A winning cover letter should be specific but not boring. Typically, three paragraphs are enough to showcase your educational background and work experience as well as special skills. Your cover letter should not look your biography, it should be kept simple but direct to the point. The cover letter should be written without spelling or grammatical errors and should be impressive enough to grab the hiring manager's attention.

An effective letter and resume should be tailored to a specific person and are customized based on the type of job position and industry. Both cover letter and resume should focus on the needs and requirements of the company. A college graduate interested in a position with a company should put their study skills to the test and do some research about the company they are interested to work for. This includes but not limited to the company's goals, vision, and mission statement. The information you got will not only impress hiring managers but will give a better idea of what a company is like which is essential for any prospective employer to know.
